Since 1954

Who we are

The restaurant’s history is intertwined with that of Rome’s glamorous and cinematic golden age: numerous figures from the worlds of entertainment, cinema, and culture have chosen Il Piccolo Mondo as a place for gathering and conviviality. Among the most famous guests are international personalities such as Brigitte Bardot, Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Peter Falk, and Alain Delon, along with big names in European cinema like Jean-Paul Belmondo and figures beloved by the Italian public such as Nino Manfredi and Olympic champion Nino Benvenuti.

Today, the restaurant’s menu is the result of careful research by our team and continues to evolve over time with new offerings, always respecting the Roman and Italian culinary identity that our guests expect.

From 1954 to the present, staying true to tradition

The History

The history of Il Piccolo Mondo restaurant began in 1954, when a tavern owner from Amatrice decided to open a small wine bar on the central Via Veneto. Originally, the establishment was primarily dedicated to serving wine, particularly that produced by the founder himself in the countryside of the Castelli Romani, a region that has always been closely tied to the winemaking tradition of Lazio.

Over the years, the tavern gradually transformed into a restaurant, keeping pace with the extraordinary cultural and social ferment of 1960s Rome. During the Dolce Vita era, Via Veneto became the heart of Roman high society, and Il Piccolo Mondo established itself as one of the most popular spots in the area, thanks to its combination of traditional cuisine, quality wines, a welcoming atmosphere, and a central location in the heart of the capital.

In the years that followed, management passed to the founder’s children, who continued to develop the restaurant’s identity while maintaining a strong connection to Roman culinary tradition. This journey has allowed the restaurant to evolve without ever losing its soul.

In 2002, the restaurant was taken over by Stefano Ajelli, a brilliant entrepreneur who has always been passionate about fine dining, style, and cars. To this day, he remains at the helm of the restaurant, continuing the process of renewal while staying true to tradition.

In 2026, his son Federico joined the company after studying in Italy and Germany, where he successfully earned a degree in physics. His pragmatic approach and international background contributed to Stefano’s goals: to offer a unique culinary experience to diners from Italy and abroad (with Diana’s support) without losing sight of Roman roots and authentic flavors.

The goal has always been to offer an inclusive, high-quality dining experience capable of adapting to the tastes of an increasingly international clientele. For this reason, the restaurant also offers specialized options, such as vegan menus and gluten-free dishes, created by the chef to allow every guest to discover and appreciate the flavors of Roman tradition according to their dietary needs.
